Ask Freddy: How Do I Ace An Advertising Job Interview?

Q: Dear Freddy:

I received an interview offer from an ad agency for its account management intern position. Do you have any tips on acing the interview?

A: Dear A:

Congrats on scoring the interview — particularly in these brutal times for the industry!

First, have stories ready to tell about your projects, teams, and client experiences (good and bad; if bad, describe how you resolved the issues). The stronger the stories, the more memorable you’ll be.

If they ask a question and you don’t know the answer, just say you don’t know — but you’re a quick learner. Then tell a story about how you learned something quickly and applied it successfully.

They’ll also ask you why you want to work there, so research the agency thoroughly before the interview — and not just the website. Review their social media and news stories about them. Select two of their campaigns and note what you liked about them.

Then it’s your turn to ask questions. Ask about their business during these times (e.g., how has social distancing impacted client relationships, since there are no more in-person meetings or fancy meals out). Ask how they would have you contribute to certain accounts, since that will make them already think of you as a team member.

Above all, relax. I know times are tough and jobs are hard to come by, but job interviews are like dates — you’re evaluating them as much as they’re evaluating you, hoping for a great match.

  2. Especially liked your advice to thoroughly research the agency. Coming in armed with knowledge does wonders for your confidence, and that kind of knowledge always reveals itself and wins other people’s respect. Being proactive gives a person an enormous advantage, in work and in life. Great post, Freddy!
